About the work
Nuova Twist is a large, twisting steel sculpture that anchors the entrance plaza of Bankers Court in Downtown Calgary. Reaching 18 feet tall, its dynamic, spiraling form contrasts with the rigid geometry of the surrounding environment. Crafted from weathering steel, the sculpture shifts over time, developing a rich, rusted that adds warmth and texture to the entrance.
Its open, flowing curves invite movement around and through the space, subtly guiding and welcoming visitors toward the building’s entrance. The sculpture catches and reflects light throughout the day, animating the plaza with shifting shadows and color. By softening the architecture of Bankers Court, Nuova Twist brings energy, contrast, and human scale to the site.

About the artist
Beverly Pepper (1922–2020) was an American sculptor known for her monumental works in steel, iron, bronze, and stone. Though originally trained as a painter, she turned to sculpture in the 1960s, developing a distinct style that blends industrial materials with organic forms. Her work often engages directly with its environment, emphasizing harmony between sculpture, landscape, and architecture. Pepper was a pioneer in site-specific art and among the first women to gain international recognition in large-scale sculpture. Her pieces appear in public spaces and major collections worldwide, reflecting both a deep sensitivity to place and a powerful sculptural presence.
