About the work

Capturing the past in the present, this wonderful mural by artist Quinn Mazurkewich depicts Alexander Corner, a retail and office space building that once stood on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary. The original building was built during the sandstone era and completed around 1889 and demolished in the late 1920′s. Quinn’s artwork aims to draw attention to the forgotten things, such as buildings and the lives they have lived. This mural reflects on our history, art history, and where the future is taking us. Quinn is a Calgary based artist, currently working on her BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts. She is heavily influenced by art history and architecture, and her interests lie in telling the untold stories of the mundane, such as those of buildings. Quinn is fascinated by the storytelling that art can produce and aims to bring joy to those who view her work. This inspiring mural was brought to life through a partnership with Brookfield Properties and the Calgary Downtown Association. About the Artist

Quinn Mazurkewich is a Calgary based artist, currently working on her Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting, at the Alberta University of the Arts. She is inspired by the lives of those around her, and heavily influence by art history and architecture. Her interests lie in telling the untold stories of the mundane, such as the buildings that surround us. Quinn is fascinated by the storytelling and the emotions that art can produce and aims to bring joy to those who view her work. Quinn’s artistic practice has covered a wide variety of topics and styles over the years. These days, it is more focused to include elements of architecture and portraiture. Quinn’s artwork aims to draw attention to the forgotten things, such as buildings and the lives they have lived. Her most recently produced body of work focused on demolished buildings in Calgary. The buildings Quinn focused on were all built in or around the early 1900′s, and later demolished, not deemed historical buildings or worth saving by the city. Her goal with this body of work was to revive these buildings, bringing them back to the modern day and giving them their moment to shine.
