About the work

Thomas Schütte’s Gartenzwerg is a suite of etchings based off a series of glazed ceramic and glass sculptures of the same name. Gartenzwerge, or garden gnomes, are traditional decorative objects found in lawns and gardens across cultures. Rendered in stark white lines on vibrant monochromatic backgrounds in the style of architectural drawings, Schütte presents his garden gnomes as stoic geometric figures akin to chess pieces, varied and anonymous shapes stripped of their typical folkloric figuration.

About Thomas Schütte

Thomas Schütte (b. 1954, Oldenburg, Germany) is among the most important contemporary artists of his generation. Schütte’s work is uncategorizable in a traditional sense, as he produces sculpture, drawing, prints, ceramics, and architecture across a vast range of materials and scales, from small aluminum figures that are only a few centimeters tall to monumental steel, bronze and glass sculptures. He has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions, including at the Monnaie de Paris, France (2019); Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2019); Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden (2016); Foundation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland (2014); Serpentine Gallery, London, UK (2012); Reina Sofa, Madrid, Spain (2010); and Dia Art Foundation, New York (1999). In 2005, he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 51st Venice Biennale in Italy.
