About the work
John Baldessari’s Noses and Ears, Etc. series are not traditional “prints,” but editions made with stacked layers of Sintra panels to create multi-level cutouts and relief-like depth. By isolating one feature and masking another, Baldessari’s disparate elements transform the traditional portrait into a new type of abstraction.

About John Baldessari
A hugely influential artist and a giant in the history of twentieth century art, John Baldessari (b. 1931, National City, CA; d. 2020, Los Angeles, CA) pioneered the use of appropriated photographs and texts in art in the 1960s. Often referencing existing narratives such as films, his work constructs new meanings by altering, erasing, and recombining various elements. Baldessari was the subject of a major retrospective, Pure Beauty, organized by Tate Modern, London, UK, that traveled to MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; LACMA, Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2010–2011). His work was included in 53rd Venice Biennale in Italy (2009), where he won the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, as well as the 50th and 47th editions of the Venice Biennale (2003 and 1997).
