About the work
The Lake by Oto Gillen is a composite of nine photographs taken in Central Park in the summer of 2021. Captured over the span of four minutes with an ultra-high resolution digital camera, The Lake exploits the potential of “straight” digital photography (e.g. photography without manipulation), while at the same time is conversant with influences as diverse as Impressionist and Romantic landscape painting, Japanese folding screens, and multiplayer video games. The medium is one of the artist’s own devising: dye sublimation prints on aluminum, folded so as to support themselves without any external frame.

About Oto Gillen
Oto Gillen works across photography and sculpture; he often combines the two approaches, creating photographs with a noticeable materiality, or by developing site-specific installations. The objects he makes are often similar to those that he likes to photograph.
