Brookfield Properties presents Colour Field, a new summer pavilion by Objects of Common Interest at Principal Place in Shoreditch. Installed from June to September as part of the London Festival of Architecture, the pavilion transforms the outdoor plaza into a space for pause and reflection within the city.

Curated and commissioned by Brookfield Properties and co-curated with Alter-Projects’ Anne-Laure Pingreoun-Lastro, Colour Field reimagines public space as a modern ruin, creating a structure from salvaged materials, designed to sit suspended between permanence and erosion.

Colour Field is formed from reassembled architectural elements designed to remain open to light, air and planting, allowing time and weather to shape the experience of it across the duration of the display. With sustainability at its core, the installation is constructed from unfinished marble, quartzite and travertine fragments supplied by Solid Nature, drawn from surplus stock, offcuts and unrealised projects. The pavilion reworks these discarded materials into a new collage-like composition.

Acting as both landscape and meeting place, the pavilion incorporates integrated seating and spaces that encourage movement and pause. Reaching a height of over 2 metres, the installation shifts in scale, texture and colour through changing viewpoints and seasonal light. Pampas grass planted throughout reinforces its ruin-like character, evolving gradually over the summer in response to visitors and environmental conditions.

Developed by Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, Colour Field continues Objects of Common Interest’s practice of translating still life and experiential environments into public space, producing an installation that bridges historical reference and contemporary experience.

Eleni Petaloti, co-founder of Objects of Common Interest, said: “Colour Field began with the idea of space as a contemporary fragment: something incomplete, shaped by time, something very material that you can touch and feel. Working with pieces of stone that had been left aside, we wanted to bring them back into play, allowing them to exist in a state of transformation rather than as something newly imposed. The installation isn’t designed to be experienced all at once. Instead, we hope visitors will let it unfold as they move through it through it and see the changing light and materials. This is an invitation to a slower, more attentive way of being within the city.”

Saff Williams, Vice President of Experience at Brookfield Properties, said: “We see our public spaces as places where culture can become part of everyday city life. With Colour Field, that happens through material, light and a sense of calm. By reusing stone and introducing planting, the pavilion creates a moment of softness in the middle of Shoreditch, somewhere people can wander through, sit down and take a breath. Projects like this allow us to offer the city something simple but meaningful: space to slow down, notice what’s around you and share that experience with others.”

Previous summer pavilions at Principal Place and across the City have included works by Simone Brewster, Foster + Partners and John Booth, establishing the programme as a recurring platform for experimental, temporary architecture in the public realm.

The work forms part of Brookfield Properties’ wider arts and culture programme, which activates public space across its London portfolio through contemporary architecture, art and design.
