The Retail Leader in the Light Award is the second sustainability leadership award this year for Brookfield Properties’ retail division
Brookfield Properties has been named 2021 Retail Leader in the Light, an annual award presented by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (Nareit) to member companies that demonstrate industry-leading sustainability practices.
The Leader in the Light Award comes on top of Brookfield Properties’ recent recognition as the #1 ranked Regional Sector Leader for retail companies in the Americas by Amsterdam-based global sustainability authority GRESB.
"It is an honor to be recognized with the 2021 Retail Leader in the Light Award. With more than 155 million square feet of retail property around the world, we believe we have a responsibility to lead the way in ESG performance as well as the opportunity to play a critical role in shaping the future of sustainability for our industry."

Leader in the Light winners are selected based on GRESB survey results, which measure the ESG performance of property portfolios around the world, as well as responses to a series of questions scored by an interdisciplinary panel of judges.
“We are delighted to recognize that Brookfield Properties is setting an example for how REITs can institutionalize ESG within their business management and operations,” said Fulya Kocak, SVP, ESG issues, Nareit. “We are proud to recognize Brookfield Properties for its achievements in sustainability and ESG practices.”
At Brookfield Properties, ESG principles play a vital role in the way we conduct business every day. Just as we’re revolutionizing the retail industry, we’re equally dedicated to exceeding environmental, social, and governance standards. We’re committed to the communities we serve, and we’re focused on creating a long-lasting impact that really matters.
In the past year, our U.S. retail business has had over 112 million square feet of retail space recognized by the WELL Health Safety Rating, provided $480 million in rent relief to our tenants, and donated enough food to provide 600,000 local meals to those in need.
“This award is testament to our team’s hard work and commitment to sustainability practices,” said Brookfield Properties VP of National Operations Keith Aniol. “Our company-wide dedication to best environmental practices benefits our investors, our retailers, and the communities we serve. We are proud to again be recognized as an ESG leader.”
