About the work

Julian Göthe’s large-scale wall installations examine spatial hierarchies, exhibition and artwork hanging conventions of the last two centuries, as well as the reaction to the classicist austerity of 19th century architecture. Deploying trompe-l'oeil to great effect, Göthe renders expansive and illusory vistas of infrastructure and interior architecture out of black rope and metal.

About Julian Göthe

Julian Göthe (b. 1966, Berlin, Germany) explores both epochal and marginal episodes in cultural history with an artistic practice that spans the media of collage, sculpture, drawing, and installation. References to the formal principles of Art Deco, set design, and the everyday application of modernist forms all overlap in his work. Göthe has exhibited his work internationally, with recent solo exhibitions at Kunstverein München, Germany (2020); Galerie der Stadt Schwaz, Vienna, Austria (2019); and kestnergesellschaft, Hannover, Germany (2011).
