In his new book, The 5 AM Club, Robin Sharma encourages readers to wake up early and start their day in a more focussed way in order to maximise their energy, focus, productivity and happiness.

Benjamin Franklin, American revolutionary, diplomat and inventor, once said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Indeed, there are many benefits to waking up early in the morning. For instance, studies have correlated rising early with success, suggesting that early risers are more proactive, more likely to anticipate problems and minimise them efficiently, and more prone to using their quiet morning time for goal-setting and planning out the days ahead.

It is the life-changing benefits of waking up early—at 5 am to be specific—that Robin Sharma has beautifully conveyed in his new book, The 5 AM Club. As a leading leadership guru and self-help expert, the author has been teaching the 5 am club concept for over 20 years now. Written over a four-year period, the book stresses that in order to live a great life wherein one gets to maximise one’s potential (and thereby find happiness) and be helpful to others, one has to begin one’s day early.

The author explains the importance of rising at 5 am with the help of two protagonists: an artist and an entrepreneur. The artist is looking to understand how to fuel his creativity and enhance his capabilities so he can make an enduring mark in his field through his paintings. The entrepreneur, on the other hand, feels that life itself has betrayed her due to various unfortunate circumstances that she has been facing and therefore, she needs her hope restored.

To an extent, both of these strangers are suffering from low self-confidence and are questioning the very purpose of their existence. As the book proceeds, they meet an eccentric tycoon who gives a totally new dimension to their lives by serving as their secret mentor. Every chapter has a different plot with the protagonists rediscovering themselves, which in turn brings them closer to their real selves.

The book also puts the spotlight on a specific morning routine—the 20/20/20 formula —which the author urges all readers to follow. He divides the first hour of the day i.e., from 5 am – 6 am into three segments of 20 minutes each. The first sequence is for moving, with the help of intense exercising, sweating hard and breathing deeply. The second is for reflection, through writing a journal, meditation or prayer. And finally the last 20 minutes before the day gets busy is for growing by reading, studying online, watching a useful video or listening to a podcast. This one hour a day, if utilised in the manner that the author has put forth in his book, can change one’s life for the better.

The 5 AM Club is easy to read as the author has kept the language as simple as possible for readers while also inserting some graphics to explain concepts. The book is sure to change your life after reading it, pushing you to places you had never gone to while making you stronger.
