Anton Alvarez: The Remnants

The Remnants is an installation of six large-scale clay columns by Swedish-Chilean artist Anton Alvarez, inspired by architectural practices in Chile. The exhibition, a commission by Brookfield Properties, follows Alvarez’s month-long February 2022 residency in the pop-up studio and performance space at 100 Bishopsgate, where the artist created the sculptures using his three-ton ceramic self-built press, "The Extruder", in full view of the public. With this machine, Alvarez and his studio assistants grinded down hundreds of kilos of clay sculptures back into their original powdered form. The recycled raw material fed the "The Extruder", pressing new clay shapes and forms and reincarnating the old to the new.

"Anton Alvarez will present six new works at 100 Bishopsgate from the 1st of March 2022. His column-like forms are the perfect counterbalance to the expansive open architecture of the reception. We hope the performance onsite will spark site-specific inspiration ahead of the show’s final installation and allow our community access into the inner workings of an artist at work. Creating new works from the physical remnants of past shows, Anton’s performative practice with The Extruder allows a continuum from his larger body of work and a rebirth of new ideas and forms."
