Exploring the interconnectedness of national identities and histories through global currency, Johannah Herr’s new large-scale, site-specific vinyl artwork, commissioned by Arts Brookfield, builds upon the previous work she exhibited with Brookfield Properties titled Currency. With this new piece, Herr aims to bring the conversation home - utilizing One Liberty Plaza's location in the heart of New York's financial district and thus it's integral tie to the New York Stock exchange and American economy. The work incorporates pattern motifs sourced from United States currency as well as data charts from the U.S. stock market. It also includes iconography related to the Dutch East India Company, which was the first publicly traded company; and the Buttonwood Tree Agreement, the document that laid the groundwork for the New York Stock Exchange. Through sprawling, ornamental patterning, it aims for viewers to visualize the stock market's legacy in a new way and consider how it continues to deeply impact the vitality of our lives and the city we live in.
