Reflecting an ongoing effort to build a more sustainable future for its retail communities across the country, Brookfield Properties takes top environmental, social, and governance performance award.
Demonstrating a commitment to outstanding ESG leadership, Brookfield Properties has earned the highest honor from global sustainability authority GRESB as the #1 ranked Regional Sector Leader for retail companies in the Americas.
GRESB is an internationally recognized benchmark, assessing the ESG performance of $5.7 trillion of assets under management. The GRESB Sector Leader Awards recognize real estate and infrastructure companies that have demonstrated outstanding leadership in sustainability annually.
“Across the globe, organizations are demonstrating a deep commitment to ESG integration while making important strides toward a more sustainable future for us all. Sector Leaders are the organizations setting the pace and driving progress toward a net zero future. We are proud to recognize your determination, achievement, and leadership in creating a more sustainable world.”
- Sebastien Roussotte, CEO of GRESB
Brookfield Properties’ holistic ESG program drives value across both its physical and social initiatives, reflecting a pledge to positively impact its surrounding environments by creating safe, sustainable, and vibrant communities.
For example, more than 50 Brookfield Properties’ locations now feature on-site solar, a total of 450 electric vehicle charging stations have been installed, and more than 1,000 community-based events were held at its retail properties in 2020. The events included everything from fun activities like drive-thru farmers markets to essential services like blood drives.
“We are proud to be recognized as sustainability leaders in our field. Our executive management team is committed to our ESG program and every year they continue to reinvest in our ESG initiatives. ESG commitment is a priority across the entire company.”
- Keith Aniol, VP of National Operations
Brookfield Properties
Brookfield Asset Management, the management arm of Brookfield Properties, has a goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner, in an effort to build on its leading position in renewable power.
“We recognize that ESG is an ongoing journey,” Aniol noted. “With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw the high food insecurity across many of the communities our properties serve and our teams on the ground donated over 600,000 free local meals to those in need. That’s what I’m most proud of — our ability to continue to innovate and improve upon our program.”
